The 1st World Judo Championship was held at Kuramae Kokugikan in Tokyo in 1956. Two Japanese won medals. The open weight category was the only weight division at the competition. 21 countries delegated their squads. The 2nd World Judo Championship was held at Tokyo Gymnasium in Tokyo in 1958. Three Japanese won medals in the open category. 18 countries delegated their squads. Two world-famous female Japanese judoka were born in Tokyo. Both of them were Japanese pioneers of women's international competition judo. In 1964, judo competitions were first held in the 18th Olympic Games in Tokyo. There were four categories on the occasion. In the open weight category, Mr. Anton Geesink won the gold medal. In other three divisions, Japanese judokas won the titles.
